About the role
As a probation service officer, your role is to manage offenders throughout their journey within the criminal justice system, before and after sentencing and in the community in order to reintegrating back into society. You’ll work with a range of individuals, forming trusting relationships in a role which is far from average. It’ll push you, and allow you to test yourself and develop.
Day-to-day, you’ll manage a caseload of offenders before and after sentence. We’ll look to you to assess and manage risks, provide information to criminal courts and work closely with agencies throughout the justice system to manage risk and protect the public by effectively collaborating with them. You’ll also give offenders case management support.
Probation services officers can work with a range of service users in a number of environments. These include: courts - presenting reports, local Probation Offices where you will manage a caseload and work with victims; or Approved Premises where you will work with residents during their sentence..
Working for us means we can be flexible about how you organise your working week. If you’re a career changer, we’ll be supportive. If you’re ambitious, you can see this as a route to a Probation Officer role. In any of these cases, you’ll be in an environment where you can grow and develop.
You don’t need a degree for this role. We ask for 5 minimum C-grade GCSEs or equivalent, which includes relevant work experience. We’re most interested in your qualities and skills. Ideally with experience of working with people who have social or personal difficulties, you’ll be empathetic, patient and resilient. You’ll also be able to produce clear and accurate written reports to tight deadlines.
By managing offenders in the community, the National Probation Service protects the public from the effect of crime and gives offenders the chance to turn their lives around. Join us and you’ll be part of a supportive team that thrives on sharing knowledge and expertise.
